Academic Advisor

REPORTS TO: REGISTRAR

STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT, SALARIED

 

 

 

 

This position is responsible for providing comprehensive undergraduate academic monitoring and advising, participating in campus-wide outreach activities and fostering the academic success of students at the college. The academic advisor must be responsive to the needs of a large number of diverse students and be prepared to work in a high-volume and fast-paced environment.

 

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

 

  • Advises incoming freshmen, undeclared majors and students involved with the college in high school programs.
  • Assists students with program planning, general course selection and other academic support.
  • Collaborates with Admission, Financial Aid, Student Life and Athletics to support student academic success and retention efforts.
  • Coordinates academic development workshops for students and support for probationary students.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of First Year Experience and Exploration programming.
  • Maintains student advising records.
  • Assists with maintenance of the advising module in Jenzabar EX.
  • Coordinates the placement and waiver process.
  • Updates four-year advising plans with the deans.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of advising-related publications and materials.
  • Assists faculty with academic advising procedures and implementation.
  • Assists with new student orientation programs and open campus days.
  • Assists in the tracking of student progress.
  • Serves as an information resource for students, faculty and staff regarding college policies and procedures relative to academic advising.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the registrar.


 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & KEY COMPETENCIES:



 

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling or related field.
  • Background in contemporary academic intervention practices.
  • Knowledge of retention services, developmental education and specialized academic programming for a variety of populations.
  • Experience in academic advising and/or retention support.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Growth and “doer” mindset and institutional teamwork ethic.
  • Creative, strategic, thoughtful, and has a sense of humor.
