
NP/PA PRACTITIONER AND OPERATIONAL MEDICAL DIRECTOR
Full-time, 40 hours a week
Purpose Statement
The purpose of the NP/PA and Operational Medical Director (also known as the “medical director”) is to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing the mission of the free clinic to provide accessible healthcare to underserved individuals. This role combines clinical expertise with operational leadership to:
- Provide compassionate, evidence-based medical care as a licensed NP/PA practitioner.
- Oversee day-to-day clinical operations to ensure safe, efficient, and equitable service delivery.
- Support and mentor volunteer providers, staff, and students in fostering a collaborative, interprofessional environment.
- Guide quality improvement initiatives, compliance, and best practices to strengthen patient outcomes and organizational sustainability.
- Serve as a liaison between the clinic’s medical team, community partners, and leadership to align care delivery with the clinic’s mission and the needs of the community.
For over 50 years, Lake County Free Clinic has served the community by providing primary health, dental care, and case management to uninsured or underinsured individuals and families. The clinic provides care free of charge and is the only free clinic serving Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula and Eastern Cuyahoga County.
I. Overall Responsibility
Primary provider for clinic, including patient education, diagnosis and treatment of illness. Referral of patients for appropriate follow up care. Knowledge and basic interest/understanding of the underserved community- including establishing connections with local resources, and medication assistance.
II. Accountability
The medical director is accountable to and receives direction from Executive Director. The Medical Director practices medicine using best practices and evidence-based medicine in collaboration with the supervising/collaborating physician. The Quality Improvement (QI) Committee of the Board of Directors works with the Medical Director to monitor Clinic operations, including quality of care to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient-centered delivery of services by all Clinic staff and volunteers. The Medical Director collaborates with the supervising physician as necessary.
III. Clinical Responsibilities
- Teaching, counseling, diagnosing and treatment of illness for chronic and acute minor to moderate illnesses.
- Sustaining and supporting patients during diagnosis and treatment.
- Obtaining health history and assessing health/illness status.
- Maintaining quality assurance of patient care given or assigned.
- Providing patient education in the areas of health promotion and disease
prevention.
- Referral of patients as necessary to other health providers and/or social service
agencies.
- Appropriate follow up of patients with acute and chronic health problems.
- Other duties as assigned
- Undertakes necessary review and update of best practices with collaborating/supervising physician in line with current medical practice and reports back to Executive Director and Quality Improvement Committee on needed changes.
IV. Medical Director Responsibilities.
- An active member of the Quality Improvement Committee- establishing QI parameters and integrating them into clinical practice within the clinic and staff.
- Assist with oversight, orienting, and integration of provider volunteers.
- Oversee clinic, pharmacy, and lab within the office- including knowledge of the policies, and operations of both.
- Initiate innovative ideas to benefit clinic patients and open opportunities for better access to medical care.
V. Skills and Knowledge Required
- Thorough knowledge of the expanding role of NPs and PAs
- General knowledge of quality improvement practices and procedures.
- Skills in interpersonal, community and group relations.
- Ability to exercise sound leadership and judgment.
- Technical skills to function as a primary care medical provider.
Qualifications, Experience and knowledge
Preferably 2+ years as an NP or PA
Spanish speaking preferred
Demonstrated leadership skills
Demonstrated skills in interpersonal relationships
Valid Practitioner License in Ohio
Interest and Sensitivity to working with underserved populations
Education/Expertise
Nursing Doctorate or Master of Science in Nursing or
Master’s degree in PA Studies
Required Credentials, Licensure or Certification
Current RN license to practice in Ohio
Current APRN license to practice in Ohio
Nurse Practitioner Certification – Adult or Family Medicine or
Current PA license to practice in Ohio
Current NCCPA Certification
Experience as a primary care, family medicine or internal medicine PA preferred
