Academic Support Coordinator, Learning Commons
REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE LEARNING COMMONS
STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT, SALARIED
Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full-time position of Academic Support Coordinator, Learning Commons. The Learning Commons is a forward thinking, collaborative, social, and supportive environment for the campus community. The Academic Support Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting students and providing timely help with a variety of academic needs for both in person and online students, including individual and group offerings. This position involves operation of tutoring services, learning and study skill assistance, Academic Learning Center consultations, and individualized mentoring/coaching for academic needs. The coordinator works closely with faculty, staff, and students to identify academic challenges and implement effective support strategies to improve student success and performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops, maintains, and oversees daily operations of the Academic Learning Center’s services to students on campus in any subject as appropriate.
- Monitors tutoring center activity and collaborates with College faculty to identify unmet needs, addressing those needs continuously with the Executive Director of the Learning Commons.
- Develops and delivers additional support services as directed by the Executive Director.
- Provides support to all LEC students requesting assistance, as needed.
- Monitors and maintains a faculty referral system for students experiencing academic challenges.
- Develops and implements learning plans for students referred to the Academic Learning Center by faculty or other campus staff requiring academic intervention.
- Collaborates with the Executive Director of Athletics and athletic coaches to assess and develop interventions for student-athletes facing academic concerns.
- Coordinates and facilitates study table sessions for each athletic team, offering support during these sessions for student-athletes.
- Cultivates a welcoming, supportive, and scholarly atmosphere in the tutoring center
- Instructs and encourages students in utilizing learning resources, skill development, and academic support programs.
- Provides assistance to students with the College’s technology tools and the Learning Management System.
- Answers directional and informational questions while maintaining awareness of the Learning Commons offerings, learning resources, and academic support tools available to LEC students; stays knowledgeable about these resources and refers students to other College services, as appropriate.
- Gathers, monitors, and tracks data on all services provided.
- Coordinates, develops, and delivers group workshops on campus and online for diverse student populations to enhance overall student success, e.g. using/accessing the LMS, communicating with instructors, time management skills, success skills workshops, etc.
- Collaborates with faculty, staff, and Student Life to enhance the promotion of the Academic Learning Center, ensuring that all areas of campus are aware of its services.
- Engages in outreach activities, including classroom visits (both on-site and online) and participation in College events.
- Collaborates with deans, faculty, and students to develop appropriate learning communities for students with similar majors.
- Interacts regularly with students, faculty, and staff in an office setting.
- May require evening or weekend hours for workshops, student sessions, or special events.
- Develops and delivers additional support services and performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of the Learning Commons.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & KEY COMPENTENCIES:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in education or a related field.
- Exceptional student service skills and a student-centered mindset.
- Ability to work professionally with students, faculty, and staff.
- Experience in higher education or academic support services is preferred, but not required.
- Strong knowledge of academic support practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to evolving educational needs.
- Proficient in technology tools necessary for the role (e.g., Excel, Gmail, Google Sheets, and Google Drive etc.).
- Growth and “doer” mindset and institutional teamwork ethic.
- Creative, strategic, thoughtful, and has a sense of humor.
